The 4th of July and Summer cookouts are right around the corner. If you’re planning a backyard bash, then State & Allen – purveyors of some of the best burgers in Dallas – has a few tips on how to grill the perfect 4th of July burger:
Start with the Right Meat
You want that meat juicy, right? Then don’t go to lean! We realize many enjoy using leaner varieties of ground beef in recipes, but when it comes to burgers, opt for an 80/20. Ground chuck with a little ground sirloin would be an excellent combination!
Another tip on the meat: make sure it’s freshly ground. The meat that’s been previously frozen has been packed down, lending itself to a more tough burger. You’ll get maximum juiciness out of freshly ground meat.
Dimple the Patty
Here’s a trick to keep perfectly flat patties every time: as you’re shaping the meat, make the patty about 1 inch thick, then dimple the middle of the patty. As the meat cooks, it will expand and you’ll get a perfect patty.
If it Sticks, Don’t Flip
Clean and spray the grate before beginning your grilling, but once the meat is on, let it rest. Test the corner of the meat and if it pulls way easily, then you’re ready to flip!
Only Flip Once
Once you’ve flipped the meat, let it sit! It is tempting to want to continue prodding at the meat, but the more you flip, the more tough the meat will be because the juices leak out every time.
