Why Are Napa Valley Wines so Special? – State & Allen

State & Allen

The Napa Valley in California has long been regarded one of the best places to get great wine, particularly in the United States. And here at State & Allen Kitchen + Bar in Dallas, Texas, we stock many delicious wines from the region. But why are wines from the Napa Valley so special? What sets them apart from other regions of the world?

State & Allen did a little investigating and here’s what we found out:

Unique Soil Combination

The soil in the Napa Valley is unprecedented in its variations, with most other wine regions around the world lucky to even have a fraction of the fertile soil that Napa does. At just 30 miles long and 4 miles wide at its largest point, the Valley is made up of varying topography, including the collision of two mountain ranges, volcanic soil from California earthquakes, varying sea levels that wash sediments in and out, and even wooded areas. These changes in topography are what make the soil uniquely suited to grow grapes of varying kinds – and do it well. There is no other wine region in the world with so many topography nuances to add flavor and depth to the wine.

Perfect Climate

At the bottom of the Napa Valley, you’ll find the San Pablo Bay, and wine loves can thank this marine inlet for creating the perfect climate for grapes of all varieties. Napa is traditionally warm and growers worry about the grapes overheating, but it’s the winds of the San Pablo Bay that rush up from the south and will cool down the grapes so they can mature slowly.

Wine Pairings for your Thanksgiving Dinner

State & Allen

Is your menu planned?

Did you buy a turkey yet?

But let’s talk important things like….what wine are you going to pair with that Thanksgiving feast?

State & Allen is here with a few recommendations that pair well with the flavors of a traditional Thanksgiving meal:

Grenache

You’ll want a fruity wine that can handle the savory and balance the traditional holiday flavors nicely. Grenache is a great choice because it typically gives off hints of cinnamon and cherry, along with strong fruity undertones, helping it team up with just about anything on the table. Grenache blends work well too.

Zinfandel

The United States makes the best Zinfandel in the world, so why not add a bottle to your Thanksgiving meal? Warm spices, fruity undertones, and hints of chocolate complement all aspects of a holiday meal.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir effortlessly blends with your holiday festivities as it boasts hints of dry herbs, cloves, citrus, and berries. Pinot Noir makes the holidays more merry and is perfect with just about any holiday meal.

Riesling

Riesling works better than most whites because it’s a perfect balance of fruit and acidity, which pairs well with the sweet and the savory dishes on your plate.

Wines to Avoid: Cabernet

While we love a good cab as much as the next guy, it just isn’t the right match for a Thanksgiving meal. Cabernets are rich in tannins, which tend to make some aspects of the traditional holiday meal taste sour.

Hopefully, this helps you build your Thanksgiving menu, and if you need a little wine fix in the meantime, you know where to find us! State & Allen has a huge selection of delicious red, white, and sparkling wines to take the edge off of the holiday season. Join us this week at the best restaurant and bar in Uptown Dallas!
