Wine Tasting: 4 Steps to Drinking Wine Like a Sommelier

State & Allen

At State & Allen, we love wine.

And we know our patrons love wine.

That’s why we offer Dallas wine specials on hand-selected wines from around the world. Reds, whites, sparklings, and roses – State & Allen has you covered!

And while many love the flavor of wine, knowing how to select the proper wine and how to sip it for optimum flavor is daunting. That’s why State & Allen is here with a few “tricks of the trade” to help you drink wine like the pros:

Step 1: Watch the Pour

As a wine ages, it will change colors, so often times, the color of the wine will give context to the wine's age. Red wines tend to lose vibrancy as they age, so watch the color as it’s poured to see how light or dark it is. For white wines, you’ll notice a golden color to indicate an older wine; watery yellow means it’s younger.

Step 2: Swirl the Wine

The main point of swirling a glass of wine is to help it breathe. Allowing a wine to oxygenate with help the flavor blossom and open up, making the wine taste better. Ready to learn the perfect swirl? Hold the glass by the stem and gently swirl it with your wrist, keeping your elbow still.

Step 3: Smell the Wine

With hundreds of grape varieties out there, each wine or wine blend will have its own unique flavor and aroma. As you swirl, inhale and see if you smell anything particular in the wine. You can also take a small sip and deliver it to the back of our tongue and hold it there. This method will help the scent travel up to your olfactory bulbs in your nose for ease of smell and taste together.

Step 4: Savor Each Sip

Wine is meant to be savored. Sipping each glass slowly helps you take in the flavors and experience the full body each wine has to offer.
